HI3TEJ Holds To Narrow Lead In radio-sport.net World Standings

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted June 16, 2008

New results from the 2008 ARRL DX CW and SSB contests, plus the final numbers in the 2007 CQ WW DX SSB test have shaken up the radio-sport.net World Standings. Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ is still the leader, but he faces some new calls chasing him for the top spot.

Here is the current Top Ten:

#1 Ted Jiminez HI3TEJ

Jiminez is one of only two operators to hold the #1 ranking in the radio-sport.net standings. With six top ten finishes, Jiminez has blended strong outings in RTTY contests with good results in WPX SSB, ARRL 10 and CQ WW SSB, keeping him in the top slot.

Jiminez has one win, in CQ WW RTTY. He kept his top position thanks to a third place finish in the 2007 CQ WW SSB test.

#2 Hrane Milosevic YT1AD

Edging closer to the top slot is Serbian contester Hrane Milosevic, who oftens operates from his Tunisian contest station 3V8BB. His five top ten finishes include a win in the 2007 IARU and WPX CW, giving him 46 points, just two back of HI3TEJ.

#3 tie Vadim Ovsiannikov UA9CLB

Ovsiannikov must defend his WAE CW title from 2007 to stay near the top of radio-sport.net standings. His five World Top Ten finishes include two third place efforts in WPX RTTY and CQ WW RTTY, tying him with K1ZM at 38 points.

#3 tie Jeff Briggs K1ZM

The biggest jump in the radio-sport.net standings goes to Briggs, who often operates from his fully loaded contest station VY2ZM in Canada. The veteran contester has five Top Ten finishes, highlighted by a win in the Stew Perry 160, and an amazing second place in last year's CQ WW SSB.

#5 Charles Fulp K3WW

Also making a jump into the radio-sport.net Top Ten was K3WW, who rang the bell with a first place finish in ARRL CW and a third place effort in ARRL SSB. His five Top Ten finishes give him 37 points, just one behind UA9CLB and K1ZM.

#6 - John Crovelli W2GD

Crovelli drops from the top two slots for the first time because he did not travel to P40W for the 2008 ARRL DX Contests this year. A third place in the 2007 CQ WW SSB kept him in the Top Ten.

Crovelli is currently recovering from a tower accident, which required surgery and extensive rehab. "Things are progressing well for me," Crovelli recently told radio-sport.net.

#7 tie Felipe Lopes CT1ILT

One of the world's top young operators, Lopes is in 7th place in the radio-sport.net standings, with four Top Ten finishes, including a win in the 2007 WPX CW. Expect to hear him in the big WRTC qualifying contests as he tries to make it to Russia for the 2010 WRTC. He has 33 points.

#7 tie Tom Georgens W2SC

Now tied for 7th place, making his first foray into the radio-sport.net Top Ten is Georgens, who may be best known for his trips to Barbados, where he operates as 8P1A, 8P5A and more. He used a win in the 2007 CQWW SSB and a second place World in the 2008 ARRL CW contest to rack up 33 points. More are on the way, as Georgens could soon be at the top of the heap.

#7 tie Yasir Gocet TA3D

Gocet is the first Turk to crack the radio-sport.net Top Ten, using four top ten finishes to tally 33 points. His jump was highlighted by a second place finish in the 2007 CQ WW SSB contest and a win in the 2007 CQ WPX SSB test.

#10 tie Antonin Bechnya OK7CM

#10 tie Doug Zwiebel KR2Q

Two of the world's top QRP operators are tied for 10th place in the radio-sport.net standings, as Bechnya and Zweibel fill out the Top Ten. KR2Q used a third place in the 2008 ARRL CW and a second in the 2007 CQ WW SSB to reach 31 points. Bechnya has five Top Tens to his credit.

Changes Announced In radio-sport.net World Standings Calculations

Two new contests are being added to the radio-sport.net World Standings, as Single Operator points can now be won in both the WAE SSB and CW contests.

The 2007 results of both WAE contests have been added to the overall scores.

Another change is that any operator who gets disqualified from a contest used in the radio-sport.net rankings will have ten points subtracted from his/her score. That will expire a year later, as do all other scores.

Radio-Sport.Net World Rankings

The idea for the radio-sport.net single operator rankings is quite simple: to showcase the top operators who consistently score well in major ham radio contests.

Stations are awarded points for Worldwide Top Ten finishes in the various single op categories like high power, low power, QRP, mixed and assisted. (I do not use the TS or Rookie categories in CQ contests.) A first place finisher gets 10 points, second place gets 9 and so on, down to 1 point for 10th place.

For the radio-sport.net World Rankings, the final results of 17 different contests are used:

ARRL DX SSB and DX CW

CQ WW SSB, WW CW AND WW RTTY

CQ WPX SSB, WPX CW AND WPX RTTY

ARRL 10 METER

RUSSIAN DX CONTEST

CQ 160 SSB AND 160 CW

ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP

WAE CW and SSB

Stew Perry 160

IARU

The radio-sport.net rankings are a rolling total - that is, when the newest results are released for a certain contest, they replace the previous year's results from that same contest.
