HI3TEJ Edges Back In Front of W2GD in Updated radio-sport.net World Standings

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted June 16, 2008

With three top ten finishes in the 2007 ARRL 10 meter contest, 2007 CQWW RTTY test and the 2008 ARRL RTTY Roundup, Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ is again at the top of the radio-sport.net World Standings, just a few points ahead of John Crovelli W2GD.

Jiminez and Crovelli are the only two operators to hold the top spot in the radio-sport.net standings.

Here is the current Top Ten:

#1 Ted Jiminez HI3TEJ

Taking advantage of his prowess in RTTY contests, Jiminez used a first place in CQWW RTTY and a second overall in the ARRL RTTY Roundup to jump back in front of W2GD.

Jiminez has seven top ten finishes in the 17 contests used for the radio-sport.net rankings. They include one win and three second place finishes in ARRL SSB, CQWW SSB and ARRL RTTY, giving him 58 points.

#2 - John Crovelli W2GD

It's been back and forth for Crovelli this year, who at one point was a few points ahead and then tied to HI3TEJ. W2GD will certainly get a boost later this year when results come in for the 2007 CQWW contests.

W2GD, aka P40W, has seven top ten finishes, which include three single operator category wins in WPX SSB, ARRL CW and CQWW SSB, for 55 points.

#3 Hrane Milosevic YT1AD

Not far back in the rankings is Milosevic, maybe best known for his Tunisian contest exploits and work on major DXpeditions. Milosevic was one of two ops to have top ten finishes in both the WPX SSB and WPX CW in 2007. He has five top ten finishes overall, giving him 46 points.

#4 Vadim Ovsiannikov UA9CLB

The inclusion of the WAE DX contests gave Ovsiannikov a boost, as he jumps into the top ten with 38 points overall. UA9CLB's five Top Ten finishes include the WAE win and two second place finishes in WPX RTTY and IARU.

#5 Wanderley Gomes PY2MNL

Gomes slipped back to fifth place, even after earning a win in last year's CQWW RTTY contest. His five top ten finishes also include a win in the 2007 WPX RTTY test. He has 36 points overall.

#6 Felipe Lopes CT1ILT

Making a strong move into the radio-sport.net Top Ten, Lopes is recognized as one of the world's top young operators. His fourth place finish in the WAE SSB test from 2007 gave him enough of a boost to land him in 6th place with 33 points. He has four Top Ten finishes including a win in WPX CW.

#7 Antonin Bechnya OK7CM

Sticking around in the radio-sport.net Standings, Bechnya used a fifth place World QRP finish in WPX SSB and a third place QRP in WPX CW to land at number seven. He has five top ten finishes overall giving him 31 points.

#8 John Bayne KK9A

Now a point behind OK7CM is John Bayne KK9A, who is best known by his Aruba callsign of P40A. Bayne has three victories to his credit in ARRL SSB, CQWW SSB and CQWW CW. He will lose at least one of those when the 2007 CQWW results come out, as he did not defend his 2006 CQWW CW QRP title.

#9 Chris Merchant KA1LMR

With four top ten finishes, Merchant, who usually is also found challenging for top finishes in QRP, stays in fourth place with a total of 29 points. He has two second place World finishes in ARRL 10 and CQWW SSB.

#10 Ymanol Yoseva Caires YV5YMA

Edging back into the top ten again, YV5YMA used first place finishes in both ARRL SSB and WPX SSB to total 26 points, rounding out the radio-sport.net Top Ten.

Changes Announced In radio-sport.net World Standings Calculations

Two new contests are being added to the radio-sport.net World Standings, as Single Operator points can now be won in both the WAE SSB and CW contests.

The 2007 results of both WAE contests have been added to the overall scores.

Another change is that any operator who gets disqualified from a contest used in the radio-sport.net rankings will have ten points subtracted from his/her score. That will expire a year later, as do all other scores.

Radio-Sport.Net World Rankings

The idea for the radio-sport.net single operator rankings is quite simple: to showcase the top operators who consistently score well in major ham radio contests.

Stations are awarded points for Worldwide Top Ten finishes in the various single op categories like high power, low power, QRP, mixed and assisted. (I do not use the TS or Rookie categories in CQ contests.) A first place finisher gets 10 points, second place gets 9 and so on, down to 1 point for 10th place.

For the radio-sport.net World Rankings, the final results of 17 different contests are used:

ARRL DX SSB and DX CW

CQ WW SSB, WW CW AND WW RTTY

CQ WPX SSB, WPX CW AND WPX RTTY

ARRL 10 METER

RUSSIAN DX CONTEST

CQ 160 SSB AND 160 CW

ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP

WAE CW and SSB

IARU

The radio-sport.net rankings are a rolling total - that is, when the newest results are released for a certain contest, they replace the previous year's results from that same contest.
