WRTC-Bound HI3TEJ Still Owns #1 Slot In radio-sport.net Single Operator World Standings

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted May 10, 2010

The leader of the radio-sport.net Single Operator World Standings remain the same, as Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ kept the top spot with the addition of results from the 2009 CQ WPX CW, WAE SSB/CW and Stew Perry 160 Contests. The big jump came from another WRTC operator, Yuri Onipko VE3DZ, who is now tied for second with UA9AM.

Here is the current radio-sport.net Top Ten:

#1 Ted Jiminez HI3TEJ

With eight Top Ten finishes in a variety of world contests, Jiminez is still only the second ham to have held the top spot in the radio-sport.net Single Operator standings. The focus for the Dominican contester in coming months will be representing Central America in the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships in Russia. He now has 58 points overall.

tie #2 Yuri Kurinyi UA9AM

Edging ever closer to Jiminez is Kurinyi, who may be more familiar to contesters by his contest call RG9A. The Russian now has seven top ten finishes on his score line, including a second in the 2009 WAE CW and a third place in WAE SSB. UA9AM is now just three points behind Jiminez in the race for the number one radio-sport.net spot, with 50 points.

tie #2 Yuri Onipko VE3DZ

Making the biggest jump into the radio-sport.net Top Ten is Onipko, who will also be going to Russia for the 2010 WRTC in July. Onipko has seven top finishes to his credit, featuring a win in the 2009 CQ WPX CW Contest and two second place finishes in IARU and CW 160 CW. He has 50 points, just eight behind first place HI3TEJ.

#4 Jeff Briggs K1ZM

In fourth place now is another WRTC Competitor, as Briggs used his WRTC qualifying events and more to jump well up in the radio-sport.net Single Operator standings to fourth place overall, combining efforts both from the US as K1ZM and from his contest spot in Canada at VY2ZM. Briggs has five Top Ten finishes for 43 points, 15 points away from #1.

#5 Wanderly Gomes PY2MNL

Back in contention for the top slot in the radio-sport.net standings, Gomes has seven top ten finishes in the current standings, highlighted by a category win in the 2009 CQ WW RTTY contest. Many contesters might not recognize his home call, but his contest call of ZX2B is a very familiar one in many logs. Gomes has 42 points overall.

#6 Ed Sawyer N1UR

After years of work on his station in New England, Sawyer jumped into the Top Ten with a series of strong low power contest outings over the past year. The American has five Top Ten finishes, including both ends of ARRL DX in 2009 and the WPX contests from last year as well. Sawyer has 35 points, which puts him just ahead of UA9CLB.

#7 tie Phil Krichbaum N0KE

Tied with S57DX for eighth place is N0KE, who has used a series of trips to TI5N in Costa Rica to bolster his record, as Krichbaum has four top ten finishes. They include three QRP victories in ARRL SSB 2009, WPX SSB 2009 and the 2008 CQ WW CW Contest. He has 32 points overall.

#7 tie Slavko Celarc S57DX

Into the radio-sport.net Top Ten for the first time is a very familiar call from contesting, as S57DX used three categories victories in 2009 - both ends of Worked All Europe and CQ 160 SSB - to jump into the overall Top Ten. Celarc has four Top Tens to his credit, giving him 32 points and a tie with N0KE.

#9 Milan Konecny OK2BYW

In ninth place is a newcomer to the top ten of the radio-sport.net standings, as Milan OK2BYW made his way here with four strong finishes, including a category win in the 2008 IARU contest. The Czech contester has been very active over the last few years, and holds several Czech records in the CQ WW contests. He has 31 points.

tie #9 Antonin Bechyna OK7CM

Rounding out the top ten is a familiar call from European contesting as Bechyna has four Top Ten finishes, including a category victory in the 2009 IARU contest, tying him with his countryman for 9th place with 31 points.

Radio-Sport.Net World Rankings

The idea for the radio-sport.net single operator rankings is quite simple: to showcase the top operators who consistently score well in major ham radio contests.

Stations are awarded points for Worldwide Top Ten finishes in the various single op categories like high power, low power, QRP, mixed and assisted. (I do not use the TS or Rookie categories in CQ contests.) A first place finisher gets 10 points, second place gets 9 and so on, down to 1 point for 10th place.

For the radio-sport.net World Rankings, the final results of 17 different contests are used:

ARRL DX SSB and DX CW

CQ WW SSB, WW CW AND WW RTTY

CQ WPX SSB, WPX CW AND WPX RTTY

ARRL 10 METER

RUSSIAN DX CONTEST

CQ 160 SSB AND 160 CW

ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP

WAE CW and SSB

Stew Perry 160

IARU

The radio-sport.net rankings are a rolling total - that is, when the newest results are released for a certain contest, they replace the previous year's results from that same contest.
