HI3TEJ Expands Advantage In radio-sport.net World Standings; Traveling US Ops Move Up

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted May 4, 2009

The leader of the radio-sport.net Single Operator World Standings remains the same, as Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ kept the top spot after results were added from the 2008 CQ WPX SSB, 2008 WAE CW and 2008 Russian DX Contests.

Here is the current Top Ten:

#1 Ted Jiminez HI3TEJ

Repeating as low power winner in the CQ WW RTTY contest and ringing up a second place finish in WAE SSB, Jiminez now has eight top ten finishes to his credit in major contests, and a clear lead in the radio-sport.net World Standings. Just one of two operators to hold the #1 ranking, HI3TEJ has top tens in everything from RTTY contests to WPX and CQ 160, as he now owns a 24 point lead over his nearest pursuer, up from 11 points in our last update.

#2 Bill Parker W8QZA

Two trips to Costa Rica for Contesting expeditions paid off for Parker, who used a QRP win in the 2008 WPX CW and a third place in the 2008 IARU contest to jump up to second place overall in the radio-sport.net standings. Parker has five top ten finishes that include two victories, giving him 41 points in all.

#3 John Bayne KK9A

If there is one way to get high in the standings, it is to win contests, and that's exactly what Bayne has been able to do. He has four top ten finishes - all of them wins - giving him 40 points, and third place overall. His wins are is some of the biggest tests - ARRL SSB, WPX SSB and CW and CQ WW SSB, all from Aruba as P40A. But that run may be coming to an end, as Bayne recently sold his Aruba home and contest station.

#4 tie Jeff Briggs K1ZM

In a bid to qualify for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships, Briggs has turned in a series of big time finishes in different contests, and that has helped move him steadily up the standings. In this latest update, he ends up tied for fourth place with UA9AM at 39 points overall. Briggs has six top ten finishes in the current standings, topped by his win in the 2007 Stew Perry 160. He has 31 points overall.

#4 tie Yuri Kurinyi UA9AM

Maybe better known by his contest alias RG9A, Kurinyi used a win in the 2008 WAE SSB and a third place in the IARU contest to move into a tie for fourth place with K1ZM. Kurinyi has six top ten finishes, which include a fifth place in the 2008 CQ WW RTTY, giving him 39 points overall.

#6 Antonin Bechnya OK7CM

One of the world's top QRP operators, Bechnya jumped into second place earlier this year in the radio-sport.net standings, but could not repeat his strong showing in the 2007 IARU, as he dropped the eight points from that contest when the IARU numbers were updated. The Czech contester still has a solid five top ten finishes, giving him 37 points overall.

#7 Tom Georgens W2SC

While Georgens did not add or lose any points, he slid back from fifth to seventh place overall, with 36 points, off of four top ten finishes from his contest station in Barbados, where he operates as 8P1A and 8P5A. They include two wins, in the 2008 WPX SSB and the 2007 CQ WW SSB contests.

#8 tie Charles Fulp K3WW

Dropping from sixth to eighth place, Fulp is still in elite company with five top ten finishes overall in the radio-sport.net standings. He lost two points in this update, after finishing fourth in the 2008 WPX CW, down from second a year earlier. That leaves him with 33 points, tied with UA9CLB.

#8 tie Vadim Ovsiannikov UA9CLB

The WRTC competition helped Ovsiannikov stay in the radio-sport.net top ten, as he earned a second place in the WAE SSB test, giving him five top ten finishes and 33 points. That helped make up for slightly lower finishes in the CQ WW RTTY and IARU tests.

#10 tie Ed Muns W0YK

Maybe the top RTTY contester in the world right now, Muns cracks the radio-sport.net top ten for the first time, thanks to three wins in the three major RTTY contest events. Muns got the full ten points from the CQ WW RTTY 2008 test, to go with his wins in ARRL RTTY Roundup and CQ RTTY WPX, all three as P49X from Aruba. The northern California wine producer has 30 points, tying him with KR2Q.

#10 tie Doug Zwiebel KR2Q

While W0YK used RTTY contests to move up in the standings, Zwiebel is a QRP heavyweight, who has four top ten finishes to his credit. Those include a fourth place overall in the 2008 WPX CW test.

Radio-Sport.Net World Rankings

The idea for the radio-sport.net single operator rankings is quite simple: to showcase the top operators who consistently score well in major ham radio contests.

Stations are awarded points for Worldwide Top Ten finishes in the various single op categories like high power, low power, QRP, mixed and assisted. (I do not use the TS or Rookie categories in CQ contests.) A first place finisher gets 10 points, second place gets 9 and so on, down to 1 point for 10th place.

For the radio-sport.net World Rankings, the final results of 17 different contests are used:

ARRL DX SSB and DX CW

CQ WW SSB, WW CW AND WW RTTY

CQ WPX SSB, WPX CW AND WPX RTTY

ARRL 10 METER

RUSSIAN DX CONTEST

CQ 160 SSB AND 160 CW

ARRL RTTY ROUNDUP

WAE CW and SSB

Stew Perry 160

IARU

The radio-sport.net rankings are a rolling total - that is, when the newest results are released for a certain contest, they replace the previous year's results from that same contest.
