W2GD Stays #1, HI3TEJ #2 in radio-sport.net World Ranks
By Jamie Dupree NS3T, radio-sport.net
Using a victory in the Assisted category of the 2007 WPX SSB,
John Crovelli W2GD remains atop the radio-sport.net Single Operator
World Standings, just one point ahead of Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ.
While Crovelli notched his third World victory of the past year,
Jiminez added eight points with a third place World finish in
WPX SSB Low Power. HI3TEJ has 7 top-ten finishes in the contests
used by the radio-sport.net World Standings.
Seven of the top ten operators in the standings had a top ten
finish in either the 2007 WPX SSB or WPX CW contest.
Here is the current Top Ten in the radio-sport.net Single Op Standings:
#1 - John Crovelli W2GD
After being tied earlier this year with HI3TEJ, Crovelli is
again back on top of the radio-sport.net rankings, thanks to
a first place Assisted finish in the 2007 WPX SSB contest.
Crovelli has 55 points overall, for a slender one point lead.
W2GD, aka P40W, has seven top ten finishes, which include
three single operator category wins in WPX SSB, ARRL CW and
CQWW SSB.
#2 Ted Jiminez HI3TEJ
With seven top ten finishes, Jiminez is one of only two
operators to hold the #1 radio-sport.net ranking. His record
includes one win in the ARRL 10 and three second place finishes
in ARRL SSB, CQWW SSB and ARRL RTTY, giving him 54 points, just
one point behind Crovelli.
#3 Hrane Milosevic YT1AD
Not far back in the rankings is Milosevic, maybe best
known for his Tunisian contest exploits and work on
major DXpeditions. Milosevic was one of two ops to have
top ten finishes in both the WPX SSB and WPX CW in 2007.
He has five top ten finishes overall, giving him 46 points.
#4 Wanderley Gomes PY2MNL
Some of you might not recognize his home call, but you certainly
know Wanderley's Brazilian contest alias ZX2B. Gomes returned
to the top three with a fourth place finish in WPX SSB,
giving him 35 points from four top ten finishes.
#5 Doug Zwiebel KR2Q
Back in the radio-sport.net Top Ten is KR2Q, who added seven points
with a fourth place World QRP finish. Zwiebel has four top ten
finishes overall, including a win in ARRL CW, giving him
33 points.
#6 - Bill Parker W8QZA
A second place QRP finish in the 2007 WPX CW from TI5N keeps
Parker in the radio-sport.net top flight, as he has four
top ten finishes overall. Those include a win in the 2006
CQWW SSB QRP test. Look for him to be back in TI for WPX CW
in 2008.
#7 Antonin Bechnya OK7CM
Sticking around in the radio-sport.net Standings, Bechnya
used a fifth place World QRP finish in WPX SSB and a third place
QRP in WPX CW to land at number seven. He has five top ten finishes
overall giving him 31 points.
#8 John Bayne KK9A
Now tied with OK7CM is John Bayne KK9A, who is best known
by his Aruba callsign of P40A. Bayne has three victories
to his credit in ARRL SSB, CQWW SSB and CQWW CW. He will lose
at least one of those when the 2007 CQWW results come out, as he
did not defend his 2006 CQWW CW QRP title.
#9 Chris Merchant KA1LMR
With four top ten finishes, Merchant, who usually is also
found challenging for top finishes in QRP, stays in fourth
place with a total of 29 points. He has two second place
World finishes in ARRL 10 and CQWW SSB.
#10 Ymanol Yoseva Caires YV5YMA
Edging back into the top ten again, YV5YMA used first
place finishes in both ARRL SSB and WPX SSB to total 26 points,
rounding out the radio-sport.net Top Ten.
