Spurred by interest in qualifying for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships in Russia, Andy Cook G4PIQ finished first in Europe and Yuri Kurinyi UA9AM took top World single op honors in the 2008 Worked All Europe SSB Contest.
After finishing fourth in 2007, Kurinyi (UA9AM/RG9A) won a narrow victory of just over 7,000 points over Vadim Ovasiannikov UA9CLB. That finish could help UA9CLB cement a place in the 2010 WRTC.
Here are the top five Single ops outside of Europe:
1 - RG9A (UA9AM) - 2,105,870
2 - UA9CLB - 2,008,800
3 - UP0L (UN9LW) - 2,003,292
4 - 4L0A (4L4WW) - 1,938,865
5 - TC4X (OH2BH) - 1,786,125
The top five in Europe also had WRTC implications, as Andy Cook G4PIQ ran M6T to victory with 1,874,358 points, which will give him top WRTC qualifying points in his division.
Second place Tonno Vahk ES5TV did the same in the Baltics, as he finished with 1.75 million.
Here were the top five European Single Ops:
1 - M6T (G4PIQ) - 1,874,358
2 - ES5TV - 1,758,165
3 - S50A - 1,687,062
4 - OH8X (OH2UA) - 1,529,080
5 - LX7I (LX2A) - 1,510,848
All five of those ops are near the top of their WRTC qualifying divisions.
In the US, WAE SSB also had some WRTC intrigue. Jeff Briggs K1ZM had the highest claimed score from the US, but log checks dropped him to second best behind Doug Grant K1DG.
Grant finished with 1.69 million to 1.66 for K1ZM. K1LZ was the third best SOHP from the USA at 1.54 million points.
In other categories, there was a daily double in 2008, as Slavko Celarc S57DX won the Single Op Low Power title in both WAE CW and WAE SSB in 2008.
Once again, it was no contest in SSB as Celarc had 676k. His nearest competition was PD1DX at 359k.
The worldwide low power title was won by Oleg Permyakov RZ9AZ, who was the only low power entrant to make over one million points.
He won easily over Teddy Jiminez HI3TEJ, who was second with 791k.
In the multi-op competition, Team DF0HQ won with 2.29 million points, as they were the top European and World score.
The only other multi-ops over 2 million were RU1A at 2.157 and C4I at 2.10 million.
KD4D was the top US multi at 1.18 million points.
M6T - SOHP Europe
RZ9AZ - SOLP World
S57DX - SOLP Europe
DF0HQ - Multi Europe
C4I - Multi World
Check out the 2008 WAE CW results at the DARC website.
We plan to update all the numbers at wrtc.radio-sport.net on March 1, as the final results will also be available then from the 2008 CQ WPX CW Contest.
At that point, the only final results still be outstanding for all worldwide WRTC competitors will be the 2008 CQ WW DX SSB & CW contests.
Also, hams in the US and Canada will soon get results from the ARRL November Sweepstakes contests, which were WRTC qualifying events.
Only one WRTC contest is left to gain qualifying points, that being the 2009 Russian DX Contest.
