Two November Sweepstakes Titles Decided By Log Checks; WP3R Extends Winning Streak

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net

While the headline from the results of the 2007 ARRL November Sweepstakes SSB is definitely the tenth consecutive SOAB High Power win of Rich Boyd KE3Q as he again piloted WP3R to victory, there were two ops who made the winner's circle simply because they had fewer mistakes in their log.

Mitch Mason K7RL won his third straight SSB title in the Unlimited category as he lost only 1.9% of his claimed score after log checks, bumping Dave Hachadorian K6LL down to second place. Hachadorian's log coughed up 73 contacts as he lost by over 5,000 points.

Ironically, Hachadorian held onto the CW Unlimited lead because of a fairly clean log, losing only 18 of 1,328 raw contacts in the CW test, 1.36% of his claimed score. But on the SSB side, K6LL's score reduction was too high, at 3.94%.

Another switch from the claimed scores occurred in the Multi-Op ranks, as Team W6YI vaulted into first place, making up an over 8,000 point difference on Team K5NA.

K5NA lost 164 contacts in all - 100 more than were knocked out of the W6YI log - leading to an overall score reduction of 7.97 percent.

W6YI was docked 3.19% of its score, but still enjoyed a 15,000 point swing with K5NA that provided a 7k margin of victory.

The radio-sport.net numbers presented here are on total score reduction, as in how much of a difference there was between your claimed score and the final results after log checking. That is different than the ARRL "error rate."

Here are the winners of each SS SSB category and their percentage score reduction:

(A) NN5K - 1.21%

(B) WP3R - 3.15%

(M) W6YI - 3.19%

(Q) KC5R - 1.56%

(U) K7RL - 1.90%

(S) K0HC - 1.49%

Only a handful of stations made the top five in both the SS CW and SS SSB contests in 2007.

One of them was K6LL, as mentioned above, who won in CW with a 1.36% score reduction and then lost his top spot in the SSB test with a 3.94% cut.

Another was Al Sinopoli KC5R, who won the SSB QRP battle with a 1.56% score reduction and finished third in CW with a 2.62% loss.

In the Multi-Op category, Team K9NS won CW with a loss of 3.77% of their claimed score. They finished third in SSB with a score reduction of 2.88%.
