The idea of a "contest university" is spreading further and further around the globe, as earlier this month the concept was given a big reception by contesters gathered in Italy thanks in part to efforts by Tim Duffy K3LR.
"The best thing was seeing the look on the Italian faces," Duffy told radio-sport.net via email from Rome, "they ARE very hungry for this stuff and loved every minute."
Duffy was joined on the trip by Doug Grant K1DG in what was the second overseas CTU; the first was last year in England.
"We had 200 participants from all over Italy - it was a big success," said Stefano Brioschi IK2QEI, one of the cosponsors, along with Romeo Gargioni IK2EAD and Guido Tedeschi IK2BCP.
And it wasn't just hams from Italy, as interested contesters showed up from Italy, Slovenia, Morocco and Romania.
"A huge success," said Duffy, who told radio-sport.net that plans for a CTU in Italy in 2010 are already underway.
"CTU has surpassed my wildest dreams," acknowledged Duffy, who will be back in Dayton for a third year of the gathering in May, and said more DX destinations may be on the way.
"We are starting to talk to the VK's about CTU Australia," Duffy said.
"CTU brings out the very best in contesting. The sharing part is what is really special."
Of course, the K3LR call didn't hurt either.
"At the end of it - it was like I was a rock star," Duffy reported.
"They piled up for photos and autographs for 30 to 45 minutes."
As for this year's Contest University in Dayton, Duffy remains a big believer in the gathering, which coincides with the Dayton Hamvention.
"Guys in the USA are lucky to have the "big" CTU so accessible," he added.
