2010 CQ WW SSB Results Could Produce First SOAB HP World Winner From Europe Since 1958

It has been 52 years since the winner of the CQ WW SSB contest was from Europe, but it looks like that losing streak may have been broken this year by the effort of Jeff Steinman N5TJ from CR2X in the Azores.

Steinman's claimed score of over 15 million points seems to be holding up at this point, putting him in good position to become only the fourth winner of CQ WW SSB from Europe, a feat last achieved by F8PI in 1958.

"Station worked perfectly," was Steinman's short message to radio-sport.net after he returned to the United States, as the CR2X set up from the Radio Arcala group provided yet another top finish.

As for other scores, about the only other top operator given the chance to win outright this year, Jim Sullivan W7EJ, reportedly did not produce a winning score from CN2R, leaving Steinman in the lead.

Steinman's score also is expected to secure him the new record from Europe in CQ WW SSB, toppling the mark of Toni Linden OH2UA, who will be at CR2X for this year's CQ WW CW test.

"My record went to a good home and now, I guess, I am up to an ultimate challenge on CW," said Linden.

"Awesome job by Jeff," was the long distance review from Tom Georgens W2SC, who had his CQ WW SSB bid at 8P5A prematurely ended by tropical weather.

"Hurricane Tomas ended the contest at 7z," said Georgens, as power went out to his contest station on Barbados and did not return for the rest of the contest.

Steinman's score of 15.5 million is three million points ahead of UU0JM, who piloted the 4L0A contest station in Georgia to 12.1 million points.

In third place worldwide at this point is another European, Tonno Vahk ES5TV, who churned out 10.9 million points from 4O3A in Montenegro.

"Jeff smoked us badly," said Vahk.

Just behind Vahk is Didier Bironneau FY5FY, who operated FY5KE to 10.7 million points, the highest single operator score from South America.

Just A Little CQ WW Surgery, That's All

The top Single Operator Score in North America came from Jeff Briggs K1ZM, who pushed his VY2ZM station to 10.5 million points - just a few days after having chest surgery.

"You gotta be NUTS to do this," Briggs said, as he needed some help from his wife to crawl around and connect some of his cables before the start of CQ WW SSB.

"I was pretty sore and operated with some abdominal pain," Briggs told radio-sport.net, "but HEY....it was CQWW and the start of a new round of WRTC qualifying."

"As it turned out, I bettered my previous HIGH for a CQWW SSB from here by about 5% - so I was delighted with the score. CR2X of course ran away with this one and it looks like around a #5 finish for me - but I have little to complain about when you consider the situation as a whole."

Over in the low power category, the CQ WW SSB effort of Robert Kasca S53R is holding up, as he claimed 4.3 million points as ST2AR in Sudan.

"I'm pretty happy with the score!" Kasca wrote on 3830 after the contest.

PJ2T, CN3A, D4C Top World Multi Ranks

There could be more wood heading to the trophy case at PJ2T, as the Carribean Contesting Consortium station ran up 31 million points to take the claimed score lead in the Multi-Multi category.

Team DR1A leads in Europe, while Team K3LR seems to have won the USA Multi-Multi competition for a sixth consecutive year, as theyclaimed 21.9 million points. Team W3LPL was at 19 million.

"No other station/team has 6 in a row in USA MM in the history of CQWW Phone," an excited Tim Duffy K3LR told radio-sport.net.

The world Multi-Two battle pitted two teams with similar calls against each other, as Team CN3A in Morocco ended up with 35.2 million points to 34.3 million for Team CR3A.

The USA leaders in M/2 is Team KC1XX, which often joins K3LR and W3LPL in a robust M/M battle in CQ WW, instead was a Multi-Two entry this year.

The Multi-Single crown could be headed to Team D4C, as they posted 24.6 million points, a comfortable lead over Team P33W at 20.3 million.

The European M/S leader is E7DX, while K1LZ is in charge of the USA M/S competition.

If you don't recognize what's in the background, that's the Phoenix capsule which was used to rescue all of those Chilean miners who were trapped underground for weeks and finally freed earlier this year.

CE4CT was a Multi-Two entry this year, as they broke the Chilean record in that category with a claimed score of 10.4 million points.

"Thanks to my partners," wrote Roberto CE4CT.

Here is a picture of Tonno Vahk ES5TV, at the controls of 4O3A during the 2010 CQ WW SSB contest. The picture shows off the new and improved SO3R setup that was used.

"3rd radio also included SDR receiver for band monitoring," Vahk told radio-sport.net. While Vahk said it needs a little more tweaking, "thanks to several station improvements and more experience the score came out to be still marginally better than last year."
