2010 CQ WW CW Results Bring Double Red Card and First American Yellow Card Warning

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted September 16, 2011

The offensive on ham radio contest cheating continues for the CQ Worldwide Contest Committee, as the results for the 2010 CQ WW CW test included two Red Cards and five Yellow Cards for rules violations, as three different stations in Europe were penalized in both the SSB and CW contests.

Red Cards:

  • RT5Z (RA3CW) - unclaimed assistance and unverifiable contacts
  • HG3DX (HA3MY) - multiple signals by a single operator

    Yellow Cards:

  • W2RE - only one transmitter and one band permitted during any 10 minute period by Multi-Single entries
  • YT5A - same violation of the 10 minute rule
  • OK2BXE - unclaimed assistance
  • RZ3AXX (RA3AKT) - unclaimed assistance
  • E79D - unclaimed assistance

One interesting note is that three of those who were penalized in the CW contest, were also given cards in the SSB results:

  • RT5Z (RA3CW) received Red cards in both contests
  • E79D had a Red and Yellow card
  • RZ3AXX (RA3AKT) was given two Yellow Cards

The CQ WW Contest Committee also announced that six other entries were rejected for "non-compliance with the rules," for using more than one signal on the same band.

SN3R, RY9C, EM7L, RT3F, RT9J and HG1Z were are all told that a repeat will not be allowed.

"A warning letter was sent to each entrant indicating repetition of the violation will result in a RED card," the CQ WW CC announced.

The CW penalties also included some interesting subplots, as Team W2RE became the first American entry to be sanctioned by the CQ WW Contest Committee.

Before now, Red & Yellow Cards had been given almost exclusively to entries from Eastern Europe and Russia, but the Multi-Single entry of W2RE, WW2DX and AB3CX was hit with a Yellow Card, which prevents a station from being considered for any award in that contest.

Like W2RE, Team YT5A was also hit with a Yellow Card. One of those on the YT5A team was Hrane Milosevic YT1AD, who has had a checkered past when it comes to cheating allegations in CQ WW.

61 ENTRIES SINGLED OUT FOR ASSISTANCE

The CQ WW Contest Committee also announced that 61 different entries for the CW test were using some type of 'assistance,' though it was not noted in their entry.

The CQ WW CC did not publicly accuse any of them of wrongdoing, simply thanking those entrants "who helped make the results more accurate."

Here are the 61 calls that the CQ WW Contest Committee says were using outside contesting aides, but did not note that in their category choice:

    4XØA, 9A2AJ, CT1AOZ, DJØMDR, DJ2XC, DK3VZL, DM3MM, EA5KA, EA7OT, EIØW, ERØFEO, F6DDR, HA1ZH, HA6FQ, HA7YS, IK3UNA/1, IK6MNB, IZ2EWR, JT5DX, K3TM, KV4FZ, LA2AB, LZ5XQ, LZ9W, OE3I, OE8Q, OH2PQ, OK1NG, OL6T, OQ5A, PA1CC, PA6Z, R4HR, RG3R, RG6G, RK3IM, RK9DM, RU6AX, RX3AGD, S58Q, SP1NY, SP3FYX, SP4TKR, SQ1DWR, UA6LCN, UC7A, UP1G, USØSY, US2WU, UT2LU, UWØK, UYØZG, UZ8I, W2CCC, W3FW, W3NO, WP3C, XR3A, Z32ID, Z35T, and Z37M.

You can see the list for yourself at the CQ Magazine web site.

For Alfredo Velez WP3C, that move into Assisted territory turned out to be for the best, as he actually won the Low Power Assisted category over VP9I.

Eight different stations had the distinction of being cited for assistance by the CQ WW CC in both CQ WW SSB and CW in 2010: 4XØA, CT1AOZ, DM3MM, HA7YS, JT5DX, SP4TKR, WP3C and Z37M.

One note is that not all of these calls were single operators, prompting to some to complain about their inclusion in the list, like LZ9W.

"How LZ9W can be moved from Unassisted to Assisted category when LZ9W always since 2002 enetered MULT-MULTI category in CQ WW?" wrote Wally LZ2CJ, as he demanded a written apology from radio-sport.net for simply showing what the CQ WW CC had announced.

"PLEASE DO NOT WRITE such NONSENSE news since it surely affect the reputation of LZ9W!" LZ2CJ wrote in an email.

"I still insist that you publish official apology on your web site for what you have written ! Your comments are harmful to the reputation of LZ9W we have been building for over 10 years already!"
