It's the goal of many in a state QSO party - getting the county sweep - and it's no different in the Alabama QSO Party, where all 67 counties were on the air in 2009, but no one could come up with every single one of them.
"Close but no cigar", was Erik Andersen K9EU, from Illinois working 66 counties. Quite a feat considered Erik was operating QRP!
There were several with 62 counties to include WA0MHJ, Mark Endorf, from Minnesota, W0BH, Bob Harder, from Kansas, WA2VYA, Frank Widmann, from New Jersey, K0RC, Robert Chudek, from Minnesota, WB8JUI, Rick Carrier from Ohio, and N6MA, Paul Gagnon from Arizona.
On the Alabama side of the contest, the equivalent "Worked all States" award goes to Dell Thrasher, KX4X from Tuscaloosa County. He worked all 50 states in 2009 and was the repeat winner in the Top Phone Score. This was not the first time that Dell had accomplished this, he also did it in 2008.
W4LEE, the East Alabama ARC in Lee County which included the all YL Phone teams of KI4ERR, DeeDee Mathews; KI4YZY, Debra Ward; KJ4UNA, Connie Beckwith; and WX4MM, Mary Moore combined with KE4UNA, Jeff Wallace and WX4TM, Tom Moore to work 49 states. W4LEE also won the Alabama Top Club Score in 2009.
Other notable finishes were N4NO, Jerry Cross, Madison County worked 48. WA1FCN, Rob Beaudoin, Walker County; K4SAV, Jerry Montgomery, Morgan County; and KY5R, Tim Wininger, Lauderdale County all worked 47.
There were 18 plaques awarded from the 2009 AQP. Additionally there were over 100 certificates awarded. Results and information are available at theAQP web site.
The 2010 AQP is expected to be even better that last years. We have 10 mobiles already lined up to give out QSOs from at least 54 counties.
Additionally there will be 4 or more Alabama club stations active this year. We will also have a Rover station.
The Alabama QSO Party callsign W4AQP will be activated by K4ZGB, Tom Hardison in 21 counties. This is the first time that this call has been on the air for the AQP.
Also the Alabama Contest Group club call, K4ACG will be activated by WA1FCN, Rob Beaudoin, from Walker County.
The AQP has gone from 12 entries in 2005 to 208 officials entries in 2009.
This QSO party has come a long way back to become a very good "Southern Style" Ham Radio event. Y'all come and let's have some radio fun!
