radio-sport.net spotlight - N6ZFO

In our contest spotlight this week is US contest veteran Bill Haddon N6ZFO.

Bill spearheaded the development of the unique NS Ladder Contests, which have been livening up the bands on Thursday nights in the US for the past five years.

Haddon got the idea for the "ladder" competition from a running group in Marin County, California.

"When I first joined NCCC in 2000, surprisingly, to me, the NCCC had no ladder competition. Indeed, ham radio had no ladder competition," Haddon told radio-sport.net.

The NS Ladder has developed into a series of Thursday night sprints, with cumulative scores and a rule that allows dupes in certain cases.

"Allowing dupes super-charges the contest with high rates," said Haddon.

"Participants really like that. So we require one intervening QSO before a dupe on the same band, but one may work another station immediately when a band change occurs."

"This featue gives NS and NSL the highest sprint rates in ham radio. And the participants really love it."
